Or can a single full-frame body with a high-resolution sensor comfortably fulfil several different roles?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/6\/64\/Sony_Alpha_7R_IV_front_view_with_exposed_sensor.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image from Wikipedia<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most discussions about high-resolution cameras revolve around sharpness, enormous prints and the ability to crop heavily. Far less attention is paid to the <em>flexibility <\/em>that comes with the current generation of 60MP+ FF sensors. Having so many pixels,  can one camera adequately fill many roles simply by changing lenses and spending those pixels prudently?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firstly, I want to make clear this article isn&#8217;t an argument that everyone should buy a 61 MP camera, or a review of a particular model. It&#8217;s an exploration of how a high-resolution body changed the way I think about camera systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s take a look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>My background<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many photographers recognise there is no such thing as one camera that can do it all and (sometimes reluctantly) run more than one system. Perhaps one high resolution camera, one fast  camera, one lightweight camera and so on. This can solve multiple photographic problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it comes at a cost. More expensive gear to buy, more complexity, redundant lens systems, batteries and accessories. And worst of all, that horrible oppressive ever-present question: <em>which camera shall I use today?<\/em>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, the question in my mind has been, is there an alternative for the general-purpose photographer? The 61MP sensor has opened up new possibilities but it requires a little flexibility of thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many years I have run a m4\/3 system. It provides everything I need because printing is my preferred output medium, but not large prints. At A3+, perhaps even A2,  m4\/3 is fine for printing and it got the job done while remaining a lightweight system. My most used lens on m4\/3 is the Lumix 14-140mm superzoom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as always with m4\/3, thoughts of FF lurk ominously in the background. I wanted to explore fast primes and shallow depth of field. I picked up a used full frame Sony A7Riv with the intention of using it exclusively with fast primes while retaining my 4\/3 system for general photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All was hunky dory at first and I grew comfortable with running two systems. But, after a few months something began to nag at me\u2026it gradually dawned on me that my m4\/3 Lumix G9 body was <em>larger<\/em> than the Sony and about the same weight. I was already using the Sony for shallow depth of field and getting comfortable with it, and as much as I love the G9, I began to question exactly what I was gaining over the Sony by continuing to use it as my primary camera. Looking at it objectively, the lenses are certainly smaller and lighter than full frame lenses. But there is no benefit in body size with a premium body like the G9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This realisation made me start to seriously question the utility of running the two systems. I began to ask: maybe it was possible to squeeze more flexibility out of the full frame camera and do away with the need for two parallel systems. Could the Sony system do both jobs with a single body? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sony FF cameras come with a built in APS-C crop mode and Sony have a range of lightweight and compact crop lenses available for their APS-C range of cameras. With previous FF sensors, dropping down to APS-C mode came with serious reductions in pixel count which made the APS-C crop more of an emergency option than a serious practical increase in system flexibility. But with the 61MP family, APS-C mode brings you 26MP, which is similar territory to the majority of dedicated APS-C bodies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The A7R IV isn&#8217;t simply a full-frame camera with a crop mode. It is effectively a 61 MP full-frame camera and a 26 MP APS-C camera sharing the same body. Add Sony&#8217;s 4:3 crop option and the sensor comes surprisingly close to the resolution and proportions of a Micro Four Thirds camera. That led me to a bigger question: Could one camera body actually replace <em>three<\/em> different systems? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rest of the article explores that idea&#8230;and one more option I&#8217;ll get to later&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What follows is based entirely on my own photography and the way I work. Your priorities may be completely different, so think of this as an exploration rather than a recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Full-frame as a native format <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hope there is little controversy over the idea of running a full-frame camera in its native format! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Larger sensors offer a blend of advantages and disadvantages. The larger light-gathering area means less noise (especially at high ISO) and more dynamic range, the bigger sensor means less magnification needed for printing, which means fewer visible artefacts. The extra pixels provide for retaining detail and sharpness in large prints. The downsides are more weight and bulk, and higher cost than smaller systems (generally). If you accept the trade-offs, a full-frame high resolution camera provides exactly the benefits it says on the tin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Full-frame as an APS-C body<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is where the controversy really starts. A crop body is supposed to be smaller, lighter and cheaper. I would not want to replace a dedicated aps-c body with a full frame body (although to be honest there is almost no difference in size and weight between the A7R C and the A6700, they are almost twins). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, the idea for me would be to repurpose my A7Riv <em>occasionally. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key to this is the 18-135mm superzoom. It&#8217;s small, light and quite sharp. My use case would be to include this lens in my full-frame outfit and use it as a backup for those occasions (the evening for example) where I wanted to leave the full-frame gear in the hotel and just wander around with a lighter, simpler superzoom outfit. I could of course always use a second APS-C body for this, but 18-135mm in APS-C crop mode provides a 26MP option every bit as useful as a dedicated APS-C body and the combination makes for a comfortable carry. Full-frame as a super M4\/3 body<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I prefer the 4:3 squarer ratio of m4\/3 &#8211; it&#8217;s one reason why I use a m4\/3 system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, given that the A7Riv is about the same carry size and weight as my Lumix G9 which I mainly use with the 14-140mm, is there much of a loss re-purposing the A7Riv to APS-C crop mode and switching to 4:3 aspect ratio with the 18-135mm? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Configured like this, I&#8217;d have: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A larger 21x16mm 4:3 sensor compared to 17x13mm for m4\/3. So a little better dynamic range and noise performance <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>23MP, which exceeds the majority of m4\/3 options<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A focal range of 31-232mm equivalent. With a little bit of cropping in post I could hit an effective 250mm at 20MP,  shorter than the 28-300mm effective range of my G9 + 14-140mm, but not catastrophically so for a casual walk around outfit <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 18-135mm Sony lens is quite small and light, but not as small and light as the 14-140mm, so I&#8217;d be trading a small weight penalty of around an extra 60g, but this is not significant mounted on a full-frame body. <br><br>I can easily see this as a kind of <em>Super-m4\/3 <\/em>alternative to standard m4\/3 built into the one full-frame body and once again I would not need to maintain a separate system or learn a new camera interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large no-desaturate\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"851\" src=\"https:\/\/whisperingcat.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/A7R02970-1024x851.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whisperingcat.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/A7R02970-1024x851.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/whisperingcat.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/A7R02970-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whisperingcat.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/A7R02970-768x638.jpg 768w, https:\/\/whisperingcat.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/A7R02970-1536x1277.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/whisperingcat.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/A7R02970-2048x1703.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">E<em>nglish lake district &#8211; A7Riv in APS-C crop mode with 4:3 aspect ration made with 18-135mm OSS<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Bridge camera replacement <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the bonus 4th camera replacement option I teased earlier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bridge cameras are usually thought of as an alternative to interchangeable lens cameras, for those not interested in learning the complexities of ILCs, and not too bothered about image quality. Simplified cameras for casual use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, I have never thought of bridge cameras in those terms. I have always thought of them as serious cameras, but with a specific use case in mind: for those occasions when an experienced photographer wants a capable camera with them, but can&#8217;t be bothered to go out with a full outfit. Perhaps when out doing something non-photographic but when you want something more flexible than a phone with you in case an unexpected photo opportunity pops up. In this mood an all-in-one camera is ideal as long as you can find a serious and capable camera (such as the Sony RX10 series or the Panasonic equivalents). <br><br>I owned a Lumix FZ1000 bridge for a long while and found it an excellent camera for those occasions when I wanted versatility and decent image quality, but didn&#8217;t want to think about gear options. I could just chuck the FZ1000 in a small bag and forget about it until I needed it. It has a wide 24-400mm equivalent superzoom and a 1&#8243; 20MP sensor. I wrote a 10 article series on <a href=\"https:\/\/whisperingcat.co.uk\/wp\/review\/panasonic-lumix-fz1000-1-type-sensor-superzoom-bridge-camera-now-428\/\">living with the FZ1000<\/a> if you want more information.  Image quality is never going to compete with larger sensors, but it is good enough for most purposes, and that lens provides a very versatile range without having to worry about lens choices. <br><br>The problems with the FZ1000 are that the body is as big and heavy as a full-frame camera and the lens is a motorised zoom type which I am not fond of. It is slow and clunky to extend and like most powered zooms, over-sensitive to being knocked, frequently generating lens obstruction errors. These are relatively minor issues, but they annoyed me enough to get rid of the camera even though I was generally fond of it. That, and the fact it was yet another camera option to worry about and another user interface to learn. <br><br>So can we successfully repurpose the A7Riv to fulfil this role as well on an occasional basis? I think we can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key here is the Sony 18-200mm LE superzoom. This lens is slightly longer and fatter and a bit heavier than the 18-135mm; it is also not quite as sharp. Actually, it it plenty sharp for casual use, but it has a somewhat low micro-contrast which often makes it look softer than the 18-135mm. These factors make me prefer the shorter lens. But the extra reach is important in this context. But perhaps we can spend those pixels a different way and extend its reach further? <br><br>Yes we can! By cropping in post we can actually get to a 1&#8243; equivalent sensor and 550mm equivalent reach, although only at 8MP. Enough for web use and A4 or a little bigger prints. What this means is I fit the 18-200mm and mostly use the camera as an APS-C jpeg camera with a 28-300mm equivalent optical zoom. But if I need more reach, I can instantly convert it into a virtual tele-bridge camera by switching to custom memory position 3 and pressing a custom button (I&#8217;m using the AF-On button) to engage digital zoom. The zoom factor is controlled by the rear command wheel and gives me reach all the way to a theoretical 1200mm equivalent at a pinch. I actually find I&#8217;m happy limiting digital zoom to 1.3x which gives me a convenient and still quite good 400mm equivalent reach. And if I then need a wider angle of view, I simply disable the digital zoom and get back the standard optical 28-300mm superzoom mode. <br><br>Is this the same as using a real dedicated superzoom bridge camera like the FZ1000 or RX10? Of course it isn&#8217;t, there are obvious compromises. But these compromises are what this article is exploring. Are those compromises worth it to get the maximum flexibility out of a single camera system? As I said at the beginning, there is no one camera that can do everything perfectly but extreme flexibility can offer a different experience for some. <br><br>At the beginning, I began by wondering whether one 61 MP camera could completely replace four different cameras. In the end I realised that wasn&#8217;t quite the right question. All systems have their own strengths and weaknesses, and if you&#8217;re a specialist photographer with specialised needs. you probably won&#8217;t be interested in a compromise solution, ultimately you will always be better off with a dedicated system tuned specifically for your needs. I&#8217;m not aiming this article at people who will always be better off with such a dedicated system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The better question is whether one high-resolution camera can replace the need for four different systems <em>for a general-purpose photographer<\/em>\u2014someone who isn&#8217;t looking for the perfect specialised tool, but one that can fulfil several roles well enough, while avoiding the cost, complexity and duplicated equipment that come with owning multiple systems.<br><br>For my photography, the answer is surprisingly close to yes. My main system is now full-frame 61MP. But today&#8217;s mirrorless 60 MP+ full-frame cameras are far more than just high-resolution specialists. They are remarkably adaptable photographic tools, compact and lighter than their DSLR predecessors and capable of changing character simply by changing lenses and crop modes while retaining the familiarity and muscle memory that gets lost by constantly chopping and changing systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That flexibility has fundamentally changed the way I think about camera systems. Like many enthusiasts, I photograph in several different ways. Sometimes I&#8217;m deliberately out making landscapes, sometimes I&#8217;m wandering around a city, and sometimes I&#8217;m simply out for a walk and want a capable camera with me just in case. For years I assumed those different roles required different camera systems. I&#8217;m no longer convinced they do for someone like me. The arrival of 60MP+ full frame sensors and compact mirrorless bodies was a game-changer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps most importantly, it neatly side-steps that dreadful question I mentioned at the beginning that always comes with running multiple systems: &#8220;<em>Which camera do I take with me today?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you really need multiple camera systems to cover all your photographic needs?
